Interview Dos and Don'ts

Here’s a few simple Dos and Don’t when interviewing potential candidates.

Dos

  • Engage the candidate
  • Allow the candidate to fully answer the questions
  • Have clear intentions
  • Be transparent
  • Have open body language
  • Make eye contact
  • Be consistent in line of questioning
  • Plan your questions but be responsive to what the candidate tells you, and build new questions off their answers
  • Listen

Don’ts

  • Discourage the interviewee
  • Say something which could portray the company in a negative light
  • Say something which could be deemed as offensive
  • Avoid eye contact
  • Closed body language (distance, crossed arms etc.)
  • Judge on first impressions
  • Be sure to avoid any inappropriate or illegal interview questions
  • Intentionally find faults

We need to realise that we’re selling ourselves as much as candidates are trying to sell themselves. It’s important to treat people well throughout and the interview process should mirror the value placed on the candidates. We must represent ourselves in the best possible light by being professional, honest, and transparent.
